Hello Mitchell! Good to hear from someone not afraid to try building a locomotive! As to the wheel profiles, I'm sure there will be a large and loud outcry at what I am going to suggest, and I should add that most of my experince is in the somewhat larger scales of 1/2" = 1' and 3/4" = 1' with track gauges of 2-1/2" and 3-1/2". I was also the Eastern US Secretary for the IBLS until it's demise a few years ago. All of the wheel profile "standards" that I have seen call for a 3° taper on the tread. Yet, virtually all of the models I have seen have a cylindrical tread, nit a coned tread, and without exception all have given perfectly satisfactory service. What is MOST important, is to have a radius at the root of the tread where the tread meets the flange, and to have a radiused edge at the top of the flange, so you don't have sharp edges to damage the tracks. Until I retired, I was a locomotive engineer and Road Foreman of Engines on Conrail, and I can tell you truthfully that the new diesel electric locomotives coming from LaGrange and Erie (EMD & GE) now are delivered with cylindrical wheel treads. A 3° taper over the tiny tread of an "O" scale wheel is pracitally impossible to see, much less machine.Trying to set over the compound on most lathes to cut a 3° coning of the tread would be tough too, as the graduations on the lathes probably aren't accurate enough to bother. I buttoning up my asbestos woolies, as I expect the folks with other opinions will be quite vocal. All I can say is I've been playing around with Live Steam since 1961, and have never seen a model with a cylindrical tread, but properly radiused tread to flange and flange perifery fail to track perfectly. First off, I don't know if I have ever posted my "Who I am, and what I do" information. So, just in case, I will put it in! My name is Mitchell and I live in North Florida. I have always had an interest in live steam locomotives but have kept myself to the electric realm due to time, money, etc. I have run both HO and three rail O gauge. As I have four boys now, I am pretty much O gauge. I am an avid 'Do it myself' kind of guy. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not, but always learning! I have the scratch built book and plans "A Steam Locomotive for 'O' Gauge" by Norman Dewhirst that I purchased from Tee Publishing. My question is; does anyone know what the O gauge wheel profile for a live steam loco would be? I have found a reference in a LBSC booklet that I have, but did not know if there was an official standard (like the G1MRA standard for gauge 1) that seems to be the way to go.
