Hi. I've recently been given a surplus StarMax 4000/200: it got bought cheap at an auction purely for the big monitor that came with it! The disk has been wiped, and the original CDs are long gone. Before I give up and use it for NetBSD or Linux, I thought I'd try to install a MacOS on it. According lowendmac and suchlike places, 7.5.3 should work.
An 8.1 Disk Tools floppy I downloaded boots fine, and has enough marbles to run the free 7.5.3 installer off a Zip disk. However, the installer says it doesn't support this Mac. I managed to get it to install a univeral System anyway (by option-command-launching it). The universal 7.5.3 system boots, but puts up the dialog that says "this startup disk will not work with this Macintosh model", which is consistent with the installer's opinion, so fair enough. Further digging on the web reveals that the PowerMac 4400, which Apple themselves made based on the same Tanzania board as the StarMax, shipped with 7.5.3 _and_ System Enabler 827. I haven't been able to find this enabler anywhere; and in any case the 4400 had a PPC603e, whereas the 4000/200 has a 604e if that makes any difference. So, does anyone know what it would take to make 7.5.3 happy on the StarMax 4000/200? I assume this is the sort of FAQ that used to be answered at www.starmax.net; does anyone have copies of the info that used to live there? Many thanks for any light you can shed!
