Paul, I am using a cable modem, also. It works great! However, it is wide open and totally non-secure. Assuming you've already added an Ethernet card to your StarMax, I recommend getting a 4-port router with built in firewall protection. They are easy to use, and fairly inexpensive. I use the SMC Barricade 7004ABR. I ordered mine from Zones.com, and you can get the spec sheet at http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action=products_show_datasheet&productCode=SMC7 004ABR. Any computer or office store will have a similar Lynksys product. They are all about the same, now. I've even seen them in Wal-Mart and Target...only when my wife made me go there... ;-)
The CAT-5 cable from the LAN port of your cable modem goes to the WAN port on the back of the router. Plug your Macs into any port on the front of the router, and login using Netscape or Exploder following the instructions with your router (you may have to go their homepage ahead of time and search for Mac-specific instructions to make life easier). Surfing may start out a little slow as the firewall becomes trained, but it will speed up. Then...you can explore all the other options the router has! Enjoy!
