I had this problem for a while, but managed to cure it.

I used SoundProbe 2 (from HiSoft) to create a WAV sample, which I then put
STFax to use. It now works fine, but originally, it appaered that the saved
WAV sample was corrupted in some small way.

I cannot tell you how, but this is what I observed:

Saved WAV file, say 3260kb in size. STFax only played white noise. tried
other players too (Play 16 amongst others) and they also played white
noise.

Went back to Soundprobe, saved WAV file in 16bit, file size 3340kb, STFax
and others played it back fine.

I'm not technical enough to explain this, perhaps others can?

All I know is, I have great fun playing back what other people have left on
my answerphone (STFax) as their personalised message ;))
