hi tonya,
in reading your communique two things came to mind:
(1) some rectangular slate slabs i saw in the national
museum in tokyo on which scenes, figures in landscapes,
animals, etc. had been incised with some sort of
engraving tool ... the bruised character of the
incisions was lighter and contrasted with the surface
plane color ... these same incised lines could be filled
with paint and the surface of the slab wiped clean ...
or, ink might be rolled on the surface, paper applied
and a print taken.
(2) some sculptures that noguchi made before he became
prosperous ... in search of affordable material he
acquired some thin stone facing slabs no more than a few
inches thick and discovered a way to shape and then to
assemble them in interlocking forms ... very
interesting.
