Dear Tonya, I can pass on what I know about
slate. Hepworth, a woman and contemporary of
Henry Moore did some fantastic work with
slate.
Slate has been used for cemetary headstones in
the past. It can be lettered by hand and
takes a very fine line. sharp chisels a must.
After sanding to 600 grit it can be oiled with
lineseed oil and polished to a deep dark
finish. The contrast between polished and
tooled areas can be exploited. Gold leafing
hand cut (v-sunk) letters on black slate is a
knockout.
With todays tools, you can do anything you
want with slate. You are only limited by your
imagination.
