Hello everybody,
My name is Sky Higgins, I live in the North West of England. I just got
a computer, and I'm impressed/overwhelmed by all the stuff on stone
sculpture here on the net.
I have been carving for 10 months, I am fortunate enough to be employed
full time carving small sculptures for sale in a local gallery. Its an
unusual set up - I did my training in a sculpture workshop which
concentrated on larger pieces in limestone, e.g. seats, etc. The
workshop was set up as an employment initiative and I was unemployed, so
I kind of fell into it by accident through the New Deal compulsory work
training scheme. I say training - in fact I was given a chisel, mallet
and lump of sandstone and left to get on with it.
After six months, my training finished and I was employed by the
workshop. The gallery is owned by the same company as the workshop, and
I have become their resident sculptor - I have an open studio on their
premises.
I love carving stone, and have a natural affinity for it, but I feel
very ignorant in many ways. My training was not very comprehensive,
most of what I do is self taught/discovered. I am delighted to find this
discussion group, and you'll probably all be hearing from me a lot.
salutations,
Sky
