You can certainly do that, but if you read the TapeAlert log page
yourself then any backup application which you use will be unable
to read and action the status. That's because the act of reading
the TapeAlert page clears the data.
Apart from that, it can be very useful to query some of the other
scsi log pages for tape drives. I've got a utility which does this (not
to hand, unfortunately, but I will have it on Monday) and which I
could make available if needed.
