Hi Alex,
you can get a copy of this tool (called "st_diag") in
versions of Sun Data Explorer v5.3 and later. One of
the tasks on my current todo list is to re-write my
internal-only presentation on this tool so that it's
usable by people in the wider community as well.

I'll post here when there's a preso available.

In the meantime, suffice to say that all the info you
gather with st_diag is documented in SPC-4 (SCSI Primary
Commands v4), and in specific tape drive scsi manuals.
It's a read-only utility, doesn't query the TapeAlert
page (doesn't interfere with nbu/networker et al), and
does some pretty-printing for DLT, LTO and 9xx0 tape
drives. Grab a copy from
