In my case, iostat *does* show the proper cXdZ name under a disk based install 
of OpenSolaris 2008.11 but under the Live CD i see the cmdk format.

Regardless, neither a reconfig reboot or devfsadm seem to have any impact. I 
can still see the disk in iostat and see it get detected in dmesg with no 
obvious errors, but i can't do anything with it like format or add to a zpool.

Windows XP installs fine on it and Ubuntu Live CD sees it fine. It's an older 
MB HP motherboard (c2004 era) and it doesn't have an ATA/AHCI cofig setting. 
I've set it to SAT only (ie no PATA) and that doesn't make any difference 
either.
