Our experience shows that legacy PATA mode can in fact be in the way of correct recognition of ST31500341AS disks.
Under S10U6 using legacy mode "iostat -En" showed on our machine (ESB2 controller with 6 on-board SATA ports) Vendor: ATA Product: ST31500341AS Revision: CC1G Serial No: Size: 18446743374.98GB <18446743374981496832 bytes>. and format and zpool gave various errors.
