I am Roger Barr, co-founder of Support Our Schools, a non-profit foundation. Our mission is to "support public education in St. Paul and works for its improvement." In that capacity, we have organized "Candidate College" a free course for school board candidates that is fact-based (as opposed to position-based). Support Our Schools has helped the district's office of site based improvement develop the site council model (in all its strengths and faults). We are involved in helping high schools develop small learning communities, and also work to link individual schools to community resources. Support Our Schools staff (Karen Woodward and myself) have served on many district task forces, ranging from budgetary, to academic accountability to school choice, to strategic planning. I am the parent co-chair of the Ramsey Junior High School, where I have an eighth grader. I also have a 10th grader at Central High School. Over the past seven years I have been in almost every public school in the city at least once.
