As Erik pointed out, the traffic levels on 35E are orders of magnitude greater than on the streets you mentioned. Also, I didn't mention just trees. The 35E median has been planted, and replanted, with many kinds of shrubs. None have survived. You don't see this kind of planting along city streets, at least not adjacent to the traffic lanes. But, I must admit, I'm not a scientist and I haven't heard any postmortems on the plants in the 35E median. But, if it's not pollution then what is it that's killing the plants on the median?
