Fraud.
This is a very interesting line of thinking Chuck.
Let's look a bit deeper at it, shall we?
Is it the ease of compromise that makes it fraudulent?
Would it be less fraudulent if a private "smoking
club" maintained a "membership office next door, or
three doors down or how about on the next block? How
far would a membership office need to be removed from
the "club" to be legit I wonder?
And it seems that the fee must be just right, so I
wonder what amount that would be? And would it be
fraudulent to apply one's membership towards say a
carton of smokes? It is a "smoking club" after all.
Or is it your feeling that the club might be so
popular that enough members join to be considered "the
public"? How many are too many I wonder?
Could it be that at some point the membership might
constitute a sizable enough body to be recognised as a
major sector of the protectorate?
You may not have meant it to be so Chuck, but your
thought really touched on the bigger picture I think.
While no one would argue that smoking isn't healthy, I
believe that "sticking it" to someone has just as big
an appeal for the Progressive Protection League and
it's supporters as any health benefit.
Smoking, especially for many former smokers seems to
generate the same kind of spiteful reflex as SUV's do
for the speck driving crowd.
I think that barring a compromise because it might
"make it too easy" for smokers to have their way, even
though it would remove them from the smoke free
public's proximity illustrates that.
On a related note, the chisled chin'd leader of the
Protection League was quoted in today's PPress as
saying that he was not surprised that the Chamber of
Commerce (aka the Fiends!) were against his plan to
save the population from itself, because after all
they were only interested in "the $Almighty $Dollar".
Well he may be right, but I wonder what tune he'll
play us if enough of those evil $AD's head toward the
surrounding cities outside his protective shield to
put a dent in the city's tax take?
