The SPPS MCA results for the past few years have been
rather stable, fluctuating slightly between grades and
subjects (this year is slightly better for the 3rd
grade in both reading and math). However the decline
between 3rd and 7th grade performance has been there
since the beginning and the gap has remained fairly
static.

Charles is correct to note that it is important to
track individual student's results through the grades,
this may already be possible, but unless we are
getting a very large turn-around of students into and
out of the MN public school completely (as opposed to
simply transferring within the system or district)
these figures have validity because they are all
supposedly taking the same test at the same intervals.

I'd also reiterate that SPPS's results for the Basic
Skills Test have been consistently worse.

The major difference between these tests is the MCA's
supposedly measure "mastery" of a students grasp of a
subject, while the BST measures a students practical
knowledge i.e.: does the student know when to apply
division to a problem vs. does the student know how to
divide.

This is one of the consequences of the Profiles of
Learning's evasion of imparting actual facts and
figures in favor of a broader focus on methodology
IMO.
