So (in my opinion) do blanket defenses. I also resent the implication that I have not spent many hours discussing solutions here and elsewhere. I may not have the answers straight Tim, but I damn well can identify a problem when I see one.
My apologies for implying that anyone involved in this debate is either uninformed or uninterested in this topic. I know for a fact that Tom Swift has spent many hours researching and debating educational issues. I also know and understand, that reasonable and well informed individuals can come to dramatically differing conclusions on these issues than I do.
Finally, I'd like to state for the record that this debate (in my opinion) is not about whether or not there are serious problem within the public education system. I too, can identify a problem when I see one, and I see many problems in our St. Paul public schools. Which is why I've devoted a great deal of time over the last year to finding specific solutions to those problems.
Where I respectfully differ with Tom Swift and Dick Day is on the response to those problems. I categorically deny the notion, that because there are problems in the district, that the district "sucks."
Identifying problems is the easy part, resolving them is the hard part.
I would rather have a practical debate about the best means of educating students who speak English as a second language - than argue about whether or not the district "sucks" - which gets us nowhere.
That's my opinion.
