Hillcrest Knoll Garden - Volunteers Needed

On Monday August 23, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. the District 2 Community Council will
be having a neighborhood meeting to discuss potential garden plans for
Hillcrest Knoll Park. The meeting will be held at Iowa High Rise, 1745 Iowa.

Hillcrest Knoll Park, located on Flandrau between Hoyt and Montana was
created after the 1999 floods severely damaged many homes in the area. The "park"
is not owned by the Saint Paul Parks Department but is instead owned by Public
Works Sewer Division and officially exists to pond water in the event of a
severe storm. District 2 is looking for neighborhood volunteers to assist in the
maintenance of the park and to start a gardening club. There is a particular
need for someone who would be willing to water the young trees in the park.
Water service was recently installed in the park and District 2 has committed
to maintain the trees.

Representatives of the Ramsey/Washington County Water Shed District plan to
attend the meeting and present and proposal to create a "wet prairie" garden
and interpretive exhibit in the park. Their proposal would expand the flowering
nature of the park into the lower levels that currently are turf.

District 2 Cleanup - No Brush

The Annual Fall Clean-up will be on Saturday, October 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. at Aldrich Arena. This year will be the first time that residents
will not be allowed to bring brush to the Cleanup. District 2 Community
Council is not allowing brush this year because Ramsey County is offering a free
drop off site at the corner of Frank Street and Simms Avenue. Any resident
bringing brush to the cleanup will be directed to the Free East Side Ramsey County
Yard Waste Site. Hours of operation for the East Side Site are Saturday 9 a.m
- 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and M,W,F 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. through November
29. With this site so easily accessable to District 2 residents, it was felt
it was senseless to pay the hauling and disposal costs associated with
accepting brush at the cleanup.

National Night Out - Big Success

National Night Out is a nation wide event to bring neighbors together,
sending a message to criminals that the neighborhoods are organized, and fighting
back.

This year District 2 co-sponsored three larger gathering sites: Hazel Park
Recreational Center, Boys & Girls Club of the Twin Cities, and Prosperity
Recreational Center. The largest crowd was drawn to Boys and Girls Club of the
Twin Cities 1620 Ames, where the Sackett Memorial was rededicated and moved to a
more prominent location at Sackett Park.

Again this year we had many neighbors holding events in their yards and
driveways. It was wonderful to see so many people coming together to celebrate!
