1. If you want mowed turf then ya stick with City services, but if you want wild flowers or rain gardens that takes volunteers (which is kinda the point of district councils anyway).
2. This is our first year of trying to get John and Jane Q Neighbor to drop off school supplies for local kids (or at least kids that attend local schools). Again, not looking for the giant corporate sponsor to sweep down with a bunch of applications so we can beg for money only to be told that we should have applied six months earlier or that the child has to jump through six other hoops so you can give them something. Just East Side neighbors picking up some extra school supplies when they are at Target, that we will give to local schools, that they will have handy to give out to kids that don't have stuff (no forms for the kids to fill out either). So far so good, I think people like being able to pitch in for something that is person to person. 3. District 2 takes in the largest total tonnage of any of the cleanups and does it at the lowest cost per ton. We advertise the event all summer long and I've got 26,000 people living out here so we need to stretch the City subsidy as far as we can. 4. Officer Sackett was shot and killed while on duty 25 years ago. He was responding to a call for help that turned out to be an ambush. The murderer has not yet been found. A neighborhood park (now run by the Boys and Girls Club) was named for him and a monument was place in a grove of trees. Vandalism has been a problem, so the monument has been moved to a very visible location. 5. Still haven't gotten that additional funding, though it is in the Mayor's budget - don't worry A.H. the per person funding in the new formula for District 9 will still be better than twice the per person funding for District 2 (it currently is 3 times). It continues to floor me that people with otherwise good consciences can look at the existing formula that benefits the whitest, wealthiest neighborhoods and blast me for trying to get to the same level of funding for East Side neighborhoods.
