Thanks, Chuck. Kudos on the Hillcrest Knoll Garden project! (Ah,
Hillcrest! Hafner's! Hot Licks!) I often wonder - do you get inundated
with conservative volunteers who prefer less government and, hence, less
Park services? I mean, are they more inclined to volunteer for these types
of things that are taken care of by the gov't in, say, Sweden? Are there
distinctly Republican non-profits out there? I suppose it's not always
easy to tell.. Am I stereotyping again? I am using both hands...

You will probably notice a large decrease in Back To School supplies from
3M-Maplewood now that they've taken away the Office Supply cache'. We are
not known for actually going out and buying things.

You write "... it was felt it was senseless to pay the hauling and disposal
costs... " You mean, all liberals aren't wasteful? I'll be damned!

Who's Sackett?

Keep up the good work up there. Have you received my share of the District
Council funds yet?

Little late adding this to the list but this is this months news from
District 2

Hillcrest Knoll Garden - Volunteers Needed

On Monday August 23, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. the District 2 Community Council
will
be having a neighborhood meeting to discuss potential garden plans for
Hillcrest Knoll Park. The meeting will be held at Iowa High Rise, 1745
Iowa.

Hillcrest Knoll Park, located on Flandrau between Hoyt and Montana was
created after the 1999 floods severely damaged many homes in the area. The
"park"
is not owned by the Saint Paul Parks Department but is instead owned by
Public
Works Sewer Division and officially exists to pond water in the event of a
severe storm. District 2 is looking for neighborhood volunteers to assist
in the
maintenance of the park and to start a gardening club. There is a
particular
need for someone who would be willing to water the young trees in the park.

Water service was recently installed in the park and District 2 has
committed
to maintain the trees.

Representatives of the Ramsey/Washington County Water Shed District plan to

attend the meeting and present and proposal to create a "wet prairie"
garden
and interpretive exhibit in the park. Their proposal would expand the
flowering
nature of the park into the lower levels that currently are turf.

East Side School Supply Drive

Throughout the month of August the District 2 Community Council is
collecting
"Back to School" supplies for Eastside public schools. We are looking for
your contribution of crayons, notebooks, pens and pencils, notebook
fillers, and
other popular school supplies to be allocated to needy Eastside school
children. Contributors can bring school supplies to several drop location
in the
neighborhood, including:

+ District 2 Community Council offices, 1961 Sherwood Avenue (Epworth
Church)

+ North East Neighborhoods Development Corporation (basement American Bank
building, NE corner of Prosperity & Maryland Avenues)

+ Hayden Heights Branch Library, White Bear & Arlington Avenues

+ Bizzy's Ice House Deli, NE corner of White Bear Avenue & Sherwood

+ Neuenfeldt & Company Barber Stylists, Ames Place & White Bear Avenue

+ HomeVestors real estate office, 1200 Forest (SE corner of Maryland &
Forest)

The owners will match all contributions left at the HomeVestors office!

If you would prefer to make a tax-deductible cash contribution to this
effort, please mail it to: District 2 Community Council, Attn.: Eastside
School
Supplies, 1961 Sherwood Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55119-3230. We are also
looking for

District 2 Cleanup - No Brush

The Annual Fall Clean-up will be on Saturday, October 23rd from 8:00 a.m.
to
1:00 p.m. at Aldrich Arena. This year will be the first time that
residents
will not be allowed to bring brush to the Cleanup. District 2 Community
Council is not allowing brush this year because Ramsey County is offering a
free
drop off site at the corner of Frank Street and Simms Avenue. Any resident

bringing brush to the cleanup will be directed to the Free East Side Ramsey
County
Yard Waste Site. Hours of operation for the East Side Site are Saturday 9
a.m
- 5 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and M,W,F 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. through
November
29. With this site so easily accessable to District 2 residents, it was
felt
it was senseless to pay the hauling and disposal costs associated with
accepting brush at the cleanup.

National Night Out - Big Success

National Night Out is a nation wide event to bring neighbors together,
sending a message to criminals that the neighborhoods are organized, and
fighting
back.

This year District 2 co-sponsored three larger gathering sites: Hazel Park

Recreational Center, Boys & Girls Club of the Twin Cities, and Prosperity
Recreational Center. The largest crowd was drawn to Boys and Girls Club of
the
Twin Cities 1620 Ames, where the Sackett Memorial was rededicated and moved
to a
more prominent location at Sackett Park.

Again this year we had many neighbors holding events in their yards and
driveways. It was wonderful to see so many people coming together to
celebrate!

Pilfered Puppet Replacements

651-774-2220 and we will make appropriate arrangements. You can also make
a
tax-deductible donation to the District 2 Community Council, Attn.: Puppet
Fund,
1961 Sherwood Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55119-3230.
