School Supplies Drive Is Huge Success

Throughout the month of August the four Eastside community councils (1,2,4
and 5) collected "Back to School" supplies for Eastside public schools. The
collection of supplies well exceeded any expectation. We collected hundreds of
crayons, notebooks, pens and pencils, and other popular school supplies to be
allocated to needy Eastside school children. There were over twenty backpacks
donated and cash contributions passed $700 mark!

Neighbors made HomeVestors-Old Treasure Real Estate real estate office our
number one drop off location and HomeVestors generously match all of the school
supplies dropped off there with a $250 cash donation.

If you would still like to make a tax-deductible cash contribution to this
effort, please mail it to: District 2 Community Council, Attn.: Eastside School
Supplies, 1961 Sherwood Avenue, Saint Paul, MN 55119-3230.

East 7th & White Bear Improvements

The North East Neighborhoods Development Corporation's proposal to provide
grants and loans to do storefront improvements to the businesses near East
Seventh and White Bear was recommended for funding from the Sales Tax and
Revitalization (STAR) Board. The proposal that would provide $100,000 in grants and
$100,000 in loans was the top ranked proposal by the citywide review committee.
The proposal must still get City Council approval.

District 2 Clean-Up - No Brush

The Annual Fall Clean-up will be on Saturday, October 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. at Aldrich Arena. This year will be the first time that residents
will not be allowed to bring brush to the Cleanup, because Ramsey County is
offering a free drop off site at the corner of Frank Street and Sims Avenue. Any
resident bringing brush to the cleanup will be directed to the free East Side
Ramsey County Yard Waste Site. Hours of operation are Saturday 9 a.m - 5
p.m., Sunday 11 AM - 5 PM and M,W,F 11 AM - 7 PM through November 29. With this
site so easily accessable to District 2 residents, it was felt it was
senseless to pay the hauling and disposal costs associated with accepting brush at the
cleanup.

Hillcrest Knoll Garden

On Monday August 23rd, the District 2 Community Council held a neighborhood
meeting to discuss potential garden plans for Hillcrest Knoll Park. Over
seventy neighbors attended. Representatives of the Ramsey Soil and Water
Conservation District attended the meeting and presented a proposal to create a "wet
prairie" garden and interpretive exhibit in the park. Their proposal would
expand the flowering nature of the park into the lower levels that currently are
turf. The Soil and Water District is currently looking at the costs and
potential success of the project and will continue to work with the neighbors on this
proposal.
