Maybe my R&M Sanitation should take the initiative and ask all the people
around their current customers if they would like to switch to them for a
reduced rate? "We currently pick up Hines' garbage on Mondays and would be
more than happy to pick up yours on that day, also. If more of your
neighbors switch to us, your rate will drop even further..." I suppose
Waste Management did this, but most of us blew them off, I'm sure - the
little guy does need to get off his duff once in a while and show their
superior customer service, e.g.

Sounds nice John BUT I suspect that to be efficient
the area to be served by a single hauler is going to
have to be larger than a block or two. Also, this is a
city after all. Not everyone has the kind of
neighborhood where this can happen without some level
of outside organization. Then there's the problem of
getting everyone to pay.

I don't see what's wrong with having the city organize
garbage collection. It would clearly be more efficient
than what we have now or what we would have if left to
individuals who might want to organize their immediate
surroundings.

If John's idea were viable, it would have already
happened. There's nothing to stop people from doing it
right now.
