Not even. "Safety" is not in the libertarian lexicon, which probably drives our disdain for those who seem obsessed with it. We're the guys who drives you nuts because we don't use seatbelts or motorcycle helmuts either.

Philosophically I suspect it is much much different than maintaining minimum standards of cleanliness. It's closer (please, not the same) to maintaining the right to not be shot. But you got the right idea.

Applying a Libertarian's natural distrust of law making to this is simply inappropriate. There's enough information out there to make the connection now and this isn't simply whimsy or personal preferences anymore. Safety, Self Defence and a few other things are prerogatives of government acknowledged by a fairly diverse group, and I think includes most Libertarians.

And for some reason the media and political climate is right for pushing a change. I also suspect an examination between getting things done that 'should' be done and having the right climate for doing so, or how an initiating action appears to 'just' happen, is a different discussion.
