My name is Leslie Downwind and I have been "lurking" for a few months. I
currently live in Highland on West 7th though I grew up in (then rural)
Buffalo, moved to North Minneapolis then moved to Minnetonka in High School
where I was the very first minority student they ever had (in 1987, can you
believe it?). I have volunteered on campaigns since I was a child. The first
set of campaigns I worked on without my grandmother were Ted Mondale/Steve
Kelley/Gloria Seigel in St. Louis Park along with Paul Wellstone and
Clinton/Gore. Learning to doorknock with Walter Mondale was a very memorable
experience and having his wife write my college recommendation was very cool
for a 17 year old. I served as the Director of Women's Outreach for
Clinton/Gore '96 in South Dakota while I was in college. I am currently active
in DFL politics serving as a Director on the 4th CD DFL, SD64, St. Paul and
Ramsey County DFL Executive Committees and as precinct chair in 3-11. My "real
job" is as an assistant in the Government Relations group at a large law firm.
I am not married and have no children but education is one of my highest
priorities, along with affordable housing.
A couple issues in the Mayoral race that are important to me are:
(1) How can we make St. Paul a more attractive place for people to live and
work. I realize this is very broad - but transit, education, housing and
community building are all important aspects of this issue.
(2) How can we reach out and engage our diverse communities so that there is
more involvement and ownership in our neighborhoods.
