very thanks for all your interesting answers. i'm wondering what's the best choice between sparc and linux solutions:
users use web browser, mail, latex essentially. For all scientific apps, they use remote machines, so only display is sollicited. Do you think it's best to install kde on sparc machine (from blastwave) or use it under linux? my guess is kde will consume more ressources than services it offers, but it's my point of view, essential is service given to users.
