Gerard, don't forget the choice is not Sparc and Linux, but Solaris Sparc/x86 and Linux.

If your applications run on Solaris x86 happily, that sounds like a good mix to me. If you're using Solaris 10 you get the nice new JDS look and feel, which is pretty user friendly.

If you want to install KDE I'd suggest turning off animations as much as possible.
