Hi Alex,
I'm just back from vacation, so I hope this is still relevant.

LOL. Indeed I have. Each time that I make a change I exit the session
and I still get only the calculator within the Applications menu.
To add to the original question, I am trying to add these application
for kiosk users.
Ah. That makes a lot of difference. From the below I assume you are
using the SRSS4.0 beta with Kiosk Mode and the JDS session. If that is
not your setup, please tell us what you are using instead.
The Kiosk JDS session goes to goes to some lengths to *suppress* the
entire default Gnome menu. It only allows launching applications for
which a kiosk 'application descriptor' exists and populates the menu
with the applications you have configured in the kiosk session
configuration (Kiosk page in the Web Admin GUI).
With the current kiosk product the same set of applications is offered
in all kiosk sessions.
I have a select few that are using cards and their
setups are working fine. I want to be able to deploy simple applications
such as, calculator, Firefox, StarOffice, etc.
To deploy an application you go to the Advanced/Kiosk Mode page in the
Web Admin GUI, and click the New.. button to add a new application. The
predefined 'calculator' and 'character map' applications are provided as
examples only. You can add any application you like here.
The simplest way to add a new application is to simply specify the path
to the executable in the 'custom path' box. Don't forget to select
'Executable' as application type. If you want to specify arguments that
should be passed to the application on the command line, you can add the
in the 'Arguments' text box. The file name portion of the application
path is used as the text of the menu item.
You get more control, if you create an application descriptor for your
new application. An application descriptor is a file that describes the
application for kiosk - essentially the equivalent of a .desktop file
for kiosk mode. In addition to the settings you can provide for an
executable, you can specify the label to show in the menu, an icon that
might be shown to represent the application or an application prototype
that will be copied to the home directory in addition to the 'global'
session prototype whenever the application is is selected. The syntax
and available settings of a kiosk application descriptor are documented
in the kiosk(5) man page.
Once you have a kiosk application descriptor for your application, you
can enter the path to the descriptor in the 'Custome Path' field on the
'New Application' page and select the 'Descriptor' type for this
application.
Or you can simplify future use even more, by placing your application
descriptor in the /etc/opt/SUNWkio/applications/ directory. There it
will be picked up by the Web Admin GUI and offered in the 'Predefined
Descriptor' drop-down list. In a failover group you have to make sure
that the descriptor (and of course the application) is available on
every server in the group.
I just figured that I could set up a prototypes folder that has a
default set of .desktop files and that profile could be pushed out to
DTU's when kiosk sessions are activated.
Unfortunately the lockdown settings implemented by Kiosk Mode disallow
starting most applications. The menu will not show entries for
disallowed applications, even if you find out where you have to put the
.desktop files to get them into the kiosk menu.
So you should use the existing mechanisms.
I have read through the JDS manual listed by Jörg (thanks Jörg), and I
think I have a n understanding of how to set up menus but I am unclear
how to bring what I read in the JDS manual and what I read in the Sun
Ray 4 Admin guide together.
The JDS kiosk session was designed to be decoupled from the
configuration that applies to regular desktop sessions in several
respects, so where kiosk offers its own mechanisms you need to use those.
