I have created the .desktop file in /usr/share/applications. Of course, altering the paths accordingly. However I am still not clear what to do now. I added in the calculator in the web admin thinking I could find clues there but I haven't had any luck thus far.

Has there been any news on a wiki? Just something quick that would detail how one thing refers to another so that I can put the dots in place to connect them.

Thanks,
Alex

When installing applications such as firefox,thunderbird etc you need to create a .desktop entry file in the /usr/share/applications folder. For example, if firefox is in /opt you would create the following in /usr/share/applications/
cat /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Firefox Browser
Comment=Browse the Internet
Exec=/opt/firefox/firefox
TryExec=/opt/firefox/firefox
Icon=/opt/firefox/icons/mozicon50.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Application;Network;X-Sun-Quick-Start;
StartupNotify=true

The "Categories" section above is one you'll want to pay special attention to as this determines where in the launch menu the icon is placed. In the case of firefox above, it resides in the Apps/Internet folder & also on the Quick-Start. Note that you may want to edit "mozilla.desktop" and remove the "X-Sun-Quick-Start" so that the icon only shows up under the "Internet" folder. You can also create your own folders by editing /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders/applications-all-users.. This is a little more complicated but can be explained if needed. I have been debating if some explanation of this should be added to the Sun Ray wiki - even though it isn't directly Sun Ray related.
