OK - my input on this one....
I'm not a DJ (although I might like to be!) and I also speak as a long time cd fan. I
had a turntable when I was about 12 - before CDs were commonplace or affordable in my
neck of the woods. As soon as I could I bought a CD player and that was that - no more
scratchy, poppy, sticky vinyl for me! Basically I agree with what has been said - the
cleaness of the sound, lack of distortion, seperation and dynamicism of CD is so much
better than even the best "audiophile" turntables (and I have listened to some). That
coupled with the weakness of the medium in terms of sensitivity to heat, warping,
scratching, and even the fact that bad pressings are so common kills it for me. Or at
least it did. A few months ago I went out and spent a pile of cash on a turntable -
and I love it. Why?? I think it has more to do with the music style than anything.
Dance music is generally very "clean" in production - everything is digital after all.

sic that just doesn't quite sit right with the listening mind. The speed variation of
the trusty 1210 gives it a bit of "humanity" (I know this sounds kinda weird but stick
with me!) - slight beat timing changes, pitch variations. Those snares suddnely stop
sounding quite so much like a machine gun....Additionally there is the fact that vinyl
has much worse seperation (both channel and harmonic) - and this gives a warmer, more
together sound, again adding a more "live" sound to the whole thing.
I still buy stuff on CD if I like it - but vinyl is something special I think. Also of
course, most of the best mucic produced never makes it onto CD. And you can certainly
tell what a record is going to do volume wise by looking at it - that's what the
target light's for! Quite patches are shiny black, loud are more distorted looking
(almost like static). A lot of records where the tempo fits with the rpm you can
actually see the beat going round the track...
