i'm jumping into the fray a little late here (haven't been able to
check email) and i think john weber and i have had the cd vs. vinyl
discussion in the past....here's my two cents, forgive me if these
points have already been raised:

as far as ease of use, i think that's the DJ's personal preference.
i'm not going to touch the "sound quality" issue - i've been lambasted
for it in the past, and besides, it's kind of like two guitarists
arguing over which sounds better: a 1957 Telecaster or 1993 PRS. i
grew up with CD's, had my first CD player in 6th grade. my parents
wouldn't let me go NEAR their turntable - don't ask why, to this day i
have no idea.

some DJ's claim that it's easier to do a "drop needle" on a record to
find the breaks/builds in a song than it is to skip through tracks on
a CD....again, i think it's relative. the CD decks i use (Pioneer, top
loading) have jog wheels that allow you to cycle frame by frame
through a track, seems as easy to me. again, i chalk it up to personal
preference. some DJ's say they can "see" the tracks in the vinyl. i
KNOW where the tracks are on a CD by skipping to them....i digress.

the main reason I use CDs is because they are cheaper for independent
artists cutting their own tracks. it cost me X dollars to produce 1000
copies of my CD, full color artwork, shrinkwrapping, jewel cases,
shipping, etc. for the same amount of money i could've only gotten 500
white-label (ie. blank) records, 16-min per side. only people with
lots of $$$$, major indie labels and well, majors, can afford large
quantities of vinyl because it costs so much. even acetates are
expensive relative to their quantity and limited-use characteristics.

i have friends who burn their own tracks at home using CD burners, i
know DJ's that write their own tracks. A local scene isn't going to
blossom unless the people who're writing tracks LOCALLY have the
opportunity to put out their material. A scene that's all DJ's and no
producers is like having a town with all guitar players and no bands.
A few groups in my area play live/have live groups (myself included).
most don't, so the only way they can get airplay is through a DJ....

...and i play sunscreem whenever i can! :)

(okay, time for me to "duck and cover")
