Hi, David -

<SNIP>
But with the most recent Apple G4 tower lineup and pricing, it's a tough
call.
As a Photoshop user, a G4 would be nice, but maybe not necessarily in the
S900.
I don't think I can take full advantage of the processor in it.
I can continue to use it as-is for the SCSI film scanner, CD burners and the
serial printers and use a new G4 Apple for crunching the photo files.
The external firewire drive I recently bought with this in mind would come
in
handy when the day comes (who knows when...)

Your situation, ofcourse, will be different.

Alan

Hi Alan,

I can tell you that you are right on concerning the G4 Tower vs. G4 upgrade
in an S900. I have two S900s and a G4/500/DVD-RAM. I find myself using the
G4/500 almost exclusively while maintaining my film and flatbed scanner,
serial devices, and many, many legacy SCSI drives on the two S900s. A (now
cheap) 10/100 switch and you're in business. I did add a serial card into
the G4 tower in place of the internal modem that did not come with my
machine, but I find that I don't use it that much. (Except that it allows my
LaserWriter Pro [AppleTalk] to serve on as my B&W printer.)

If a person has the space, there is no substitute for having more than one
computer, particularly in these days of DVD, CD burning and other time
consuming computer tasks. And with KVM switches, space isn't really that
much of a problem. No need for extra KB, mouse, or monitor.

And yes, I know that plunking down $1600 all at once can have a negative
impact on one's cash flow. I typically buy one or so revisions back on
hardware, hence the G4/500. I bought the first S900 bare at $3200 instead of
a 9500 for $4300. And of course, as has been noted, many on the list enjoy
the tinkering and educational benefits of the 'lowend solution'. (I still
have a 1970 AMX that I bought new, but it's not still an everyday driver.)

As some of us get older, we begin to realize that time is not an infinite
resource, so the 'fun' of discovering and solving 'challenges' competes with
'getting on with it'. One reason I still run OS 8.5 and 9.1 instead of X.
