Alan,
How about some more serial adapter info and a little ADB...
Keyspan used to make a multiple serial port PCI card, called the SXPro.
(May still be available, I don't know) It also allowed you to add
serial devices to a G3 or G4.
The Griffith Technology gPort (mentioned in last thread) the Keyspan
SXPro and another model called the Stealth Serial Port G3/G4 from
GeeThree.com, are the only ones listed on Apple's web site as being
compatible with OSX.
Keyspan's USB 4 port serial adapter, their USB twin serial adapter, and
their USB PDA adapter, are compatible with OSX. I can vouch for the USB
to PDA. I used it to HotSync my Palm to the iMac the other night. It
works with both OS 9.2 and 10.1
Griffin Technology's iMate USB to ADB is also compatible.
There is even some encouraging stuff going on with SCSI adapters and PCI
cards. Although IMHO the PCI cards show more promise than the adapters.
If you want to check the compatibility of new purchases with OSX, Apple
has a very nice spot on their web site for that purpose. Go here:
http://guide.apple.com/ushardware.lasso
Getting the right connection ports on your machine is only half the
battle with OSX. You also need compatible software. Sometimes patching
the port, patching the software, and patching the OS's communication
between the patched port and patched software is... like spitting into
the wind.
