Alan, We have a Microtech USB Smart Media/Compact Flash card reader hooked up to our c600. It is trouble free and much much faster than the standard download from camera to computer. You should get even faster downloads with FireWire. Oddly enough, the older Microtech SM/CF reader will read both 3.3v and 5v Smart Media cards. The 3.3v is the current standard. Apple used the 5v in their QuickTake Cameras. I don't know who else might have used that version. The newer Microtech models only read the 3.3v cards. I am more familiar with SM than Compact Flash. I don't know if there is more than one "v" standard in Compact Flash.
>From what I have read, the Pros much prefer Lexar brand Compact Flash. I do know that some of Lexar's older card readers would only read their cards, and not other brands. It was the USB CF reader called "jump-shot" or something similar. Microtech has been really good at moving to OSX support. I purchased one of their Zio! readers (also USB) to use with the iMac. Both of our digital cameras are older serial models, which do not band-aid to OSX using serial-to-USB adapters. The Zio was cheaper than buying a serial to USB adapter, is much faster at transferring data. I also have a Simple Technology Smart Media to PCMCIA card reader for the laptop. It too works flawlessly. Although Apple only used the PC card slots on their laptops, they are pretty common additions to Wintel machines. Can't really comment yet on using iPhoto to organize photos after downloading them. Maybe later... I highly recommend Microtech. Even though you plan to go with Compact Flash, I would buy the dual format reader. I suspect Ford will have a few comments!
