following myself up...
there are two standard wiring patterns, 568A and 568B. i don't think it
matters much which you adapt, but you need to pick one and use it
consistently throughout. i always use B, because the guy who taught me
always used B.
in the datacenters, i generally used Panduit stuff. at home, i used a
system that is sold by GC, AMP, and Leviton, among others; the jacks and
wall plates are available at Home Depot, but only in white and "electrical
ivory". i bought most of my stuff at a local electronics store instead, to
get the colors i wanted for the jacks, and to get the 19" rack and patch
panels for the basement, which is something Home Depot doesn't carry.
the GC/AMP/Leviton stuff comes in a couple of variants, some jacks have
Telco style 110 punch downs, which are easiest to do with an actual
punchdown tool. others are a snap type affair you can do with your fingers.
there are plates in the system that allow you to fit 4 or 6 jacks in one
box, but some of the 110 style jacks won't fit well in the high density
wall plates. note that there are at least two versions of the 110
punchdown, one that has the fingers projecting straight back, and one that
has them rotated at a 90 degree angle. i have some of each type, as part of
my inventory is salvage from an office renovation project.
