Others may have experiences that disprove my hypothesis, but I think 
it is more a problem of using the VGA port.  That's when this problem 
occurs for me.   I find that running a VGA monitor through a Mac to 
VGA adapter and hooking it up to the Mac display (DB15) port takes 
care of the problem.    It's possible that the ROMs would also have 
some effect.  I haven't tested for that.

It should be fairly easy for you to test, especially because you 
already have the needed chips.  Be sure to install the EPROM in the 
correct orientation.   Use that notch at one end of the chip to 
orient it properly.  It should match the silk-screened notch on the 
board (and the orientation of the chip that you remove).
