Sorry I can't be much help with that one.
There has been discussions on studdering, but mostly for audio.
I haven't paid much attention to those threads.
A good source would either be the archives or http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ and
do a search in their drive compatibility reports.
I'm surprised internal DVD drives can be had with SCSI 50-pin connectors.
Is the 10mb/sec (theoretically) internal SCSI speed enough for handling DVD ?
I have no idea.
