Chiming in a bit late on this one, but I hope this is helpful.

Depends on the size of the partition and the OS you're booting. Macs have 
always supported partitions of up to 2 GB, then doubled that somewhere 
around 7.5.5 or 7.6. With OS 8.1 and HFS+, it's somewhere in the terabyte 
(TB) range.
