Tim, I still believe there is value to using the alternate 'scsi' mounting utilities. After all, the latest versions of SCSI Probe and Mt. Everything do have a window for the ide bus plus can unmount them just as they mount them. I wouldn't disregard them. Besides, the OS sees the IDE card as scsi bus II.
Also, have you tried the Maxtor Utility? I realize you are dealing with an internal drive and this is for external devices on Mac, but it might work. Might have a Mount feature and more easily be able to recognize the drive. I've never tried it but thought I pass it on. Looks like there are some other related Mac utilities (+ pc) here too.
