And the phone company leased you the phone, but there was no way you could buy one. You basically had to pay whatever they asked for the lease. To be fair, it was pretty reasonable, but if you wanted anything other than basic black, they charged extra. I'm not really up on all the changes the break up has wrought, but long distance service is definitely worlds cheaper now than it was then. But they used long distance fees to subsidize the costs of local service when it was all one big company. I don't even have a long distance service any more (can't stand the minimum monthly fees). The calling card at Sam's is under $.04/minute now. That's cheaper than most, if not all, of the regular long distance services.
