I have tried this but get a message that "AppleGuideGlue lib not found" I suspect that this is because I have removed extensions completely... In any case I have removed all the control panels as well so Monitors Control Panel should not be getting called
But it's a very good explanation and maybe whatever Monitors CP adjusts is triggering the problem. There are still some logical puzzles like what it is that the Shift key reboot is skipping which the empty extensions folder start is running.
