Taking Howie's advice I followed the steps he outlined. I even erased the partition OS9 was on and did a clean install of OS9 and then installed 9.1. But same symptoms: I was able to boot up with the shift key down but even with all extensions cleared from the extensions folder and all control panels removed the OS welcome splash screen appeared, hard disk activity and then the desk top starts to appear and then the screen goes grey and flashes dark grey to light grey.
I can hear the disk still functioning after the screen goes which I guess is the boot process finishing. The strange thing is that I have had OS9.1 working fine before I had the trouble with my video card. I just don't understand what is the difference between having the shift key pressed and having no extensions? >Maybe we should back up a bit... there's a few things that are good to try >first when we Mac folks are having problems.
