Here in Champaign, IL we have Insight Broadband (which uses the ATTBI
infrastructure). They are referring to you using one PUBLIC (ie,
external DNS resolvable) IP. When you use a router, you will only be
using 1 Public IP address. The computers behind the router will use a
'special' private IP address range (something in the 192.168.x.x range
is marked off for private use and is not to be exposed to the greater
internet). As far as ATT will know, you only have one machine connected.

As for having a problem with the connection from your Mac, all routers
should work fine from any platform (even FreeBSD/Linux, etc). Some do
use some buggy Javascript that will confuse some Mac browsers. Case in
point, my cable modem has diagnostics built-in that you access with a
browser (most cable modems do, try typing in 192.168.100.1). On IE 5.x
the screen will never load all the way, OmniWeb has no problems. Go
figure. As for them finding out if you have a PC or Mac, a webserver can
tell what kind of web browser you are running, broswers usually also
attach the machine type. (If you use iCab/OmniWeb does "IE 5.02: Mozilla
4.0 Compatible PPC" sound familiar:)

Do note that some ISPs use your MAC (Media Access Control; not
MACintosh) address in order to assign IP addresses. If ATTBI is like
that (Insight is) you will need to first connect a computer to the modem
directly, register that MAC address and then connect the computer back
to the router, have the router clone the MAC address (check the router
manual, it is a common feature), then connect the router back into the
modem. With that done, the DHCP server will see the router as that first
computer that was registered and supply the router with the IP address
thinking that it is that computer. Note that you must FIRST connect
directly to the modem. You can't register your computer through the
router. Also, this may not apply if ATT doesn't have an automated
webform for MAC registering, in which case you will need to call the
Technical Support department and give them the MAC address of either the
router, or the cloned address from the computer.

Sorry for the long winded reply, but i've found that when it comes to
networking, knowing how things work is a necessity for getting things to
work. Write anytime you need help.
