Well it does sound like it could be the CD player but really hard to
say there are so many variables...Do you have any other CD or CDRW
available or that you could borrow? While an Apple branded CD player is
nearly sure to work many others do as well. My Yamaha CDRW works just
fine and is faster then my Apple 8x which I got for free and replaced
the 8x which didn't boot anything but the Umax system
disk.www.poweron.con a sometimes list sponsor has Apple CD rom players
of many speeds. The 8x is I think $40.00
i works fine for me but more speed is always nice. you may well find
them cheeper somewhere.

XPostFacto beta 17 has been released to the public and it works fine
with my machine no problems at all. It doesn't come with any extension
packages. So I guess use the ones you already are using. I can't test
it with older OSX's because i needed the drive for classic and dumped
it.But i've not seen any negative reports on it at all.

I would try the XPF beta 17 if I were you. Have you noticed the
throttle feature in XPF? This slows down the cpu for booting as some
machines won't boot at the full cpu speed of some upgrades. The cpu
goes back to full speed as soon as it boots. It can be set from 1-24
with 24 being the slowest. My machine works well at 16 or 17 otherwise
sometimes I have to restart a time or 2 to boot. Also you will see with
newer XPF's there is debugging stuff to turn off and on. I ran into
problems with any of the debugging stuff on. Best of luck Will S
