actually, they are the same, except i believe that "flash" was a trade
mark and/or a new buzz word for people who got tired of saying "eeprom",
i've seen the same chip referred to both ways in manuals in any case.
if there is a technical difference i'd like to know, i can't find one.

cutting the leads is definitely the way to go. what i've found to work
best is a brand new single edge razor blade (the kind with a folded
piece of metal on the back edge so you get to keep your fingers). i
find they work very well by just pressing against the leads so one lead
is cut at a time, with a slight sliding of the edge if necessary, of
course you do want to be coordinated and not slice through any board
traces but i haven't found that to be too hard to avoid. other wise a
very sharp pair of cutters will sometimes work, but it's usually hard to
get them in position and some have a bad shape at the end that makes it
hard to cut in close quarters.
