I digitize via "Coaster", freeware from http://www.versiontracker.com . After digitizing, I open with "Peak 1.65 LE", shareware from http://www.bias-inc.com . Peak gives a graphic sound display that allows easy breaking anywhere in the sound track. ( I digitized a song that was broken up throughut a VCR movie and assembled the pieces to make a complete, uninterupted song.) I have digitized from VCR, radio, cassette, CD and phono equally well. Any sound track that you can get into your computer will work. If you'd like to email me off list I can give you the particulars in more detail.
