Only suggestion I can come up with is to at least get the machine to OS 9.1. Although I jumped to 9.1 directly from 8.6, 9.1 is suppose to be far more stable compared to earlier versions of 9. It should still be available as an upgradeable download from Apple. And unless you want to torture yourself with 9.2, 9.1 is the last of the trouble-free upgrade for our machines before plunging into X. I would bump it to 9.1 while still with the 604 card and then play around with the G4/800 card installation. And, yes, I agree with Nancy on the potentially troublesome combo cards.
