Hi Keith, First of all thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself, I enjoyed reading it, and it's not often that we get to learn about each other on these lists. I can tell you from experience that you've come across a very good list, this SM List has been the best I've yet encountered. I live in North Vancouver, BC, so we're pretty much neighbors in a global sense. Also, I want to commend you for the work you're doing for others. The giving of your time and experience is a great thing. As to your C500, you certainly do need to run some maintenance/diagnostic utilities to keep it truly healthy. A favorite among many Mac users is Disk Warrior, but it needs to be run from an external disk or CD. It can't be run from the same drive that the active System is on. Apple's Disk First Aid is also very helpful, so you can certainly run that anytime at all. If it finds any serious problems, it may require booting from an external disk to repair the damage. It sounds as though there's a good chance that your drive could be fragmented, which is only natural after much use, and again it requires booting from an external disk and optimizing the fragmented drive. There are many techniques and utilities that are run on a regular basis to keep a Mac running well, and the very least of these is Apple's own Disk First Aid. Definitely run that, and see what it says. It's good that you're not having any specific problems, but some maintenance and housekeeping is certainly in order. My best advice is that you back up your most valuable data. Any personal data that you would hate to lose and couldn't replace... back it up. This list can help you recover your machine from many things, but if your hard drive goes south, your personal data is gone unless it's backed up. Heck, use floppies if you have to. Don't worry about the main applications, or the System itself, they can be re-installed. It's the word processor files, your personal passwords, pictures, recipes, that kind of stuff. I speak from experience, I've lost my hard drive more than once. Finally, if there are any Mac-savvy people in your area, you really need someone to bring over their Disk Warrior, or Norton Utilities, or TechTool Pro CD's, to help diagnose and fix any irregularities that may be present. At the very least they could optimize/defragment your main drive and you'd enjoy a bit more responsiveness as a result. I'd gladly do all the above for you if I was nearer to your location. In the meantime, enjoy your SuperMac, and your Wallstreet, and keep us posted with any problems you may experience. And keep up the good work you do.
