Actually, Hi-Fi VHS is the only magnetic analog media that can approach the quality of a CD while still preserving the warmth of the original analog signal. And although it is more complicated, all Hi-Fi VCRs record audio in two areas, along the 'edge' of the tape where a standard non-Hi-Fi VCR can read it, and also encodes the higher quality sound across the entire width of the tape, including the area that holds the video signal. I forget the physics behind how this is done though. If you wanted to do high quality audio only recording, simply connect to the audio inputs of a Hi-Fi stereo VCR, put it on SP record mode, and go.
