George -

I looked into using video tape for audio recording many years ago and
was told by
a salesman whom I thought was fairly knowledgeable that VHS requires
the video signal to maintain speed accuracy.
If I am not mistaken, Sony's Beta and 8mm decks are not subject to this
limitation and were
used widely by folks who recorded live performances at Greateful Dead
concerts, which is what
prompted me to inquire about VHS decks because I didn't want to invest
in another technology.
(And my Sony reel-to-reel deck had crapped out.)
Also, Pulse Code Modulation is used in the audio portion of many of
Sony's products,
although I have little understanding of this technical jargon.

Maybe you could elaborate on all this.

Thanks !

Alan
