One such format is called A-DAT, which dumps a digital audio signal onto
standard VHS tapes.  Don't know how common it is anymore, but it was pretty
popular among musicians about six years ago.

Other than that, I've recorded CD's straight to HiFi VHS when I wasn't
immediately able to digitize them.  The sound fidelity is not as clean as
48KHz DAT, but it blows away standard cassette.
