True, there is a possibility that the firmware may not be able to handle it, but slim.

The main reason is exactly what he experienced.  It increases the the speed, which 
increases the current usage, which increases the heat, increased heat increases the 
circuitry resistance, which increases the current requirement, which increases the 
heat, etc., etc.,..... and the normal airflow is extremely inefficient to cool things 
down.

If you want to turn it back on, put a fan on the heatsink, blowing down on to the 
heatsink.  This should keep the processor and cache cool enough not to pose any 
problem.  A good source of fans:  if you have any old external HD cases that have bad 
PSs, cables or plugs, the fans in them are either 5 or 12 vdc, which either is readily 
available in the computer.  I found one that the screw holes fit perfectly to the four 
holes in the PowerLogix circular heatsink.  According the PowerLogix Profiler, the fan 
keeps things at a steady 32 deg C.
